Initiate interest in polymer chemistry with this teacher-led, student-engaged demonstration kit. Students first predict what will happen during the demo based on their previous knowledge, and then observe the demo's dramatic polymerization reaction form a rigid foam. Next, they model or illustrate the process of polymerization and answer big-picture questions that more deeply probe the reaction mechanism. This demo requires approximately 15 min and materials are sufficient for up to 10 demos.
