Cypridina hilgendorfii. Collected from the Sea of Japan, these desiccated organisms provide an example of a luciferin-luciferase system not requiring ATP for bioluminescence. Used by soldiers in World War II to provide a dim night-light; you simply crush the animals in sand and water to get a blue luminescence. Make separate luciferin and luciferase preparations which, when mixed, will luminesce. Instructions included.Rehydrated sea fireflies (Cypridina hilgendorfii) were photographed under normal studio conditons and in total darkness. Film was exposed to bioluminescence for 30 s at f5.6.
